The Project
In 2010, the vivid and multifaceted city of Istanbul will share the title of “Cultural Capital of Europe” with the metropolitan area of the Ruhrgebiet. For this occasion, the Turkish pianist, pioneer of contemporary music, and Harvard Fellow Seda Röder commissioned six works by young composers from Istanbul. In an effort to introduce the unexplored world of Turkish contemporary music to a wider international audience, this concert project will be accompanied by a CD production of the newly commissioned works as well as this website that will allow audiences to engage with the music before and after the concerts.
The program consists of four acoustic compositions and two electroacoustic compositions with a real-time signal processing and tape component. In order to provide audiences with a prolonged experience of the concert event, a CD which features the commissioned pieces will be produced. The aim of this accompanying CD is to let concert goers take home a recording of the music they have just heard and thus inspire them to further engage with the program and New Music in general.
On this interactive web-portal (http:www//newmusicistanbul.com) visitors can share their listening experiences with one another, and engage in a dialogue with the performer and the composers. In collaboration with musicologists from Istanbul Technical University and Harvard University the website will feature podcasts and music streams that highlight the rich culture of contemporary Turkish art music.
